Author and journalist Alex Prud’homme discusses his new book The Ripple Effect: The Fate of Fresh Water in the Twenty-First Century. As Prud’homme and his great-aunt Julia Child were completing their collaboration on her memoir, My Life in France, they began to talk about the French obsession with bottled water, which had finally spread to America. From this spark of interest, Prud’homme began what would become an ambitious quest to understand the evolving story of freshwater. What he found was shocking: as the climate warms and world population grows, demand for water has surged, but supplies of freshwater are static or dropping, and new threats to water quality appear every day. The Ripple Effect is Prud’homme’s vivid and engaging inquiry into the fate of freshwater in the twenty-first century.

Joe Henry received his MFA from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. A renowned lyricist, he has had his words performed on more than a hundred recordings by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra and John Denver to Garth Brooks and Rascal Flatts. In addition to his many music awards, Henry also received a National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation “for the celebration of the natural world in his work” and the Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Henry reads from and discusses his debut novel Lime Creek, which explores the complex relationship between a father and his sons, whose deep connections to one another, to the land, and to the creatures that inhabit it give meaning to their lives.
Acclaimed character actor Anthony Zerbe joined us for this event and offered a dramatic reading from Lime Creek. Zerbe won critical praise for his adaptation of, and performance in, “Prelude to Lime Creek,” taken from the prose and poetry of Joe Henry, at the Denver Center Theatre Company. He also appeared with Garth Brooks and John Denver in “Lime Creek Christmas,” which he devised from the novel before it was published.
($24.00) Random House ISBN #978-1-40006-941-5. You can visit Joe Henry’s official web site as well.
