  1. Deanna Kasten says:

The Other is not my favorite David Guterson book. The story is psycologically disturbing. The main character is a hermit, who had been neglected and emotionally abused by his mother who was mentally ill and his father who was an alcoholic. The story is an interesting one but the telling of the tale gets tedious. I found the main character,John William, less spiritual than characterologically disturbed.
The references to obscure writers and poets did not enhance my interest.
